Genetic science is about to radically alter our lives. Sooner than you can imagine, human beings will be capable of diagnosing their own illnesses, designating the sex of their children, even designing the food they eat — all as easily as using a cell phone. Now is the time for every one of us to take control of our DNA, and one man is uniquely qualified to show us how: Glenn McGee, bioethicist at the University of Pennsylvania, pioneer in the study of "home genetics," and the acknowledged wunderkind of the exciting world found at the nexus of life science and computer technology.
One of the most respected authorities in the field of genomics — the study of the genetic "software" inside plants, animals, and us — McGee takes us on an eye-opening journey behind the headlines and into the heart of this formidable cutting-edge science. Probing the far-ranging ethical and legal implications of genomic research, McGee tackles its most controversial and hotly debated aspects — from patenting your DNA to genetic engineering at the supermarket — and explodes unnecessary fears about this wondrous new knowledge.
We live in a brave new world. Beyond Genetics provides us with the knowledge we need to take the right steps forward into tomorrow … and beyond.

Healing Back Pain

Posted: 12 Feb 2008 05:43 AM CST

Product Details
Book Publisher: Grand Central Publishing (01 February, 1991)
ISBN: 0446392308
Book author: John E. Sarno
Amazon Rating: 4.5

Book Description:
Healing Back Pain promises permanent elimination of back pain without drugs, surgery, or exercise. It should have been titled Understanding TMS Pain, because it discusses one particular cause of back pain–Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS)–and isn't really a program for self-treatment, with only five pages of action plan (and many more pages telling why conventional methods don't work). According to John E. Sarno, M.D., TMS is the major cause of pain in the back, neck, shoulders, buttocks, and limbs–and it is caused not by structural abnormalities but by the mind's effort to repress emotions. He's not saying that your pain is all in your head; rather, he's saying that the battle going on in your mind results in a real physical disorder that may affect muscles, nerves, tendons, or ligaments. An injury may have triggered the disorder, but is not the cause of the amount or intensity of the resulting pain. According to Sarno, the mind tricks you into not facing repressed emotion by making you focus on pain in the body. When this realization sinks in ("and it must sink in, for mere intellectual appreciation of the process is not enough"), the trick doesn't work any more, and there's no need for the pain. (Healing Back Pain should not be used for self-diagnosis. Always consult a physician for chronic or acute back pain.) –Joan Price

Chemical Warfare Agents: Toxicology and Treatment

Product Details
Book Publisher: Wiley (18 May, 2007)
ISBN: 0470013591
Book author: Timothy C. Marrs, Robert L. Maynard, Frederick Sidell
Amazon Rating: 5.0

Book Description:
Chemical Warfare Agents, Second Edition has been totally revised since the successful first edition and expanded to about three times the length, with many new chapters and much more in-depth consideration of all the topics. The chapters have been written by distinguished international experts in various aspects of chemical warfare agents and edited by an experienced team to produce a clear review of the field.
The book now contains a wealth of material on the mechanisms of action of the major chemical warfare agents, including the nerve agent cyclosarin, formally considered to be of secondary importance, as well as ricin and abrin. Chemical Warfare Agents, Second Edition discusses the physico-chemical properties of chemical warfare agents, their dispersion and fate in the environment, their toxicology and management of their effects on humans, decontamination and protective equipment. New chapters cover the experience gained after the use of sarin to attack travellers on the Tokyo subway and how to deal with the outcome of the deployment of riot control agents such as CS gas.
This book provides a comprehensive review of chemical warfare agents, assessing all available evidence regarding the medical, technical and legal aspects of their use. It is an invaluable reference work for physicians, public health planners, regulators and any other professionals involved in this field.
Review of the First Edition:
"What more appropriate time for a title of this scope than in the post 9/11 era? …a timely, scholarly, and well-written volume which offers much information of immense current and…future benefit."

ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0123704669
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780123704665
Binding: Hardcover

Book Description:
Social Ecology of Infectious Diseases explores how human activities enable microbes to disseminate and evolve, thereby creating favorable conditions for the diverse manifestations of communicable diseases. Today, infectious and parasitic diseases cause about one-third of deaths and are the second leading cause of morbidity and mortality. The speed that changes in human behavior can produce epidemics is well illustrated by AIDS, but this is only one of numerous microbial threats whose severity and spread are determined by human behaviors. In this book, forty experts in the fields of infectious diseases, the life sciences and public health explore how demography, geography, migration, travel, environmental change, natural disaster, sexual behavior, drug use, food production and distribution, medical technology, training and preparedness, as well as governance, human conflict and social dislocation influence current and likely future epidemics.
* Provides essential understanding of current and future epidemics
* Presents a crossover perspective for disciplines in the medical and social sciences and public policy, including public health, infectious diseases, population science, epidemiology, microbiology, food safety, defense preparedness and humanitarian relief
* Creates a new perspective on ecology based on the interaction of microbes and human activities

Neurodegeneration in Multiple Sclerosis

Publication Date: 2007-09-26
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 8847003903
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9788847003903
Binding: Hardcover

Book Description:
In multiple sclerosis (MS), conventional magnetic resonance imaging (cMRI) has proved to be a valuable tool to increase diagnostic confidence and for monitoring the efficacy of experimental treatment. However, cMRI has limited specificity and accuracy of cMRI to the most disabling aspects of the MS pathology, known to occur in and outside macroscopic lesions. Modern quantitative MR techniques have the potential to overcome the limitations of cMRI, and their application is changing dramatically our understanding of how MS causes irreversible disability. In detail, there is an increasing body of MR evidence that MS is not only a white matter disease and does not only cause focal lesions, as well as that neurodegeneration is an important aspect of the disease (since the earliest clinical phases), which is only partially related to inflammatory changes. There is also increasing perception that modern MR methodologies should be more extensively employed in clinical trials to derive innovative information.

Book Description:
There has been very rapid development in computing in recent years and this is now a general trend in the field of orthopedics. Orthopedic trauma is no exception, as there is much enthusiasm surrounding the use of surgical navigation in musculoskeletal trauma. In light of these developments, the successful first edition of this book has been revised and updated. A lot of new information has been added to the original chapter on CAOS (computer-aided orthopedic surgery). Also, as the WHO has published new guidelines on osteoporosis management, together with the many conceptual changes in this area, adding a chapter on osteoporosis is both timely and appropriate. A chapter on hip fracture rehabilitation has also become necessary, not only because it echoes the teachings of the chapter on osteoporosis, but also because of the projected exponential increase in the occurrence of this fracture by the year 2050.

Mastering OpenLDAP

Posted: 01 Feb 2008 04:49 AM CST

Configuring, Securing and Integrating Directory Services

This practical introduction to OpenLDAP for Application Developers emphasizes how to get things done, going into Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) theory only to answer practical questions. It demystifies OpenLDAP, providing a solid understanding of how to use its directory and covering building directory services, integrating directory services, and developing directory-enabled PHP or Python applications. Readers need only basic Linux system administration experience, not LDAP experience. Open-source OpenLDAP directory server is included in all major Linux distributions; many open-source and proprietary applications can use OpenLDAP's services. Client applications use LDAP to connect to OpenLDAP, search the directory, and (if authorized) modify and manipulate records. Most often used to provide network-based authentication services for users, LDAP servers have many other uses: address book, DNS database, organizational tool, even network object store for applications.

A guide for Java developers and architects

OSWorkflow: A guide for Java developers and architects

This book covers all aspects of OSWorkflow for Java developers and system architects, from basics of Business Process Management and installing OSWorkflow to developing complex Java applications and integrating this open-source Java workflow engine with the third-party components Drools for business rules, Quartz for task scheduling, and Pentaho for dashboards. Authored by an active developer of the OSWorkflow project, it gives step-by-step instructions, explaining the basics and clarifying and reinforcing principles with real-life examples. OSWorkflow is a pure Java open-source workflow engine for technical users, who can focus on the business logic and rules without Petri Net or finite state machine coding and easily integrate OSWorkflow into applications to create simple or complex workflows as needed. Because OSWorkflow provides a relatively low-level but highly flexible workflow implementation for Java developers, it is not a quick plug-and-play solution for non-technical users.

Learning PHP Data Objects

Posted: 01 Feb 2008 04:45 AM CST

This book is for PHP developers who need to use PHP Data Objects (PDO) for data abstraction. Covering an overview of PDO, getting started, error handling, prepared statements, handling rowsets, advanced uses, and use in an MVC application, it first describes the topic, then gives step-by-step instructions for a particular example. A final appendix covers the object-oriented features of PHP 5. Readers should be familiar with PHP and aware of the basics of data abstraction. Lighter, faster, more powerful than existing data abstraction interfaces, PDO is an open-source query abstraction layer for accessing databases and manipulating returned records that is used with a database-specific PDO driver to access a particular database. It has the same role as classic database abstraction layers such as ODBC and JDBC. PDO ships with PHP 5.1, and is available as a PECL extension for PHP 5.0; PDO requires the new OO features in the core of PHP 5, and so will not run with earlier versions of PHP.

The Best Damn Server Virtualization Book Period

Posted: 01 Feb 2008 04:43 AM CST

Including Vmware, Xen, and Microsoft Virtual Server

Server Sprawl and escalating IT costs have managers and system administrators scrambling to find ways to cut costs and reduce Total Cost of Ownership of their physical infrastructure. Combining software applications onto a single server, even if those applications are from the same software vendor, can be dangerous and problems hard to troubleshoot.

Virtualization allows you to consolidate many servers onto a single physical server reducing hardware, electrical, cooling, and administrative costs. These virtual servers run completely independent of each other so if one crashes the other are not affected. Planning and implementing a server consolidation is a complex process. This book details the requirements for such a project, includes sample forms and templates, and delivers several physical to virtual migration strategies which will save both time and costs. Readers of this book will easily be able to plan and deploy VMware, Microsoft Virtual Server, and Xen.

Key Features:
* Create a virtual network to exchange information or provide a service to other virtual machines or computers.
* Use virtualization to support removable media such as CD or DVD optical disks
* Reduce server costs, administration overhead, and complexity
